Studying entrepreneurship in college definitely equipped me with many tools necessary for successfully thinking up, starting, and growing a business, but what I failed to realize then that is so clear now is the fact that what I learned is theory. We were given the knowledge which helped construct a solid entrepreneurial foundation, but the rest of the journey, from the foundation up, was up to the individual's willingness to persevere and commitment to their idea.
One of my favorite quotes, made famous by Edison, states that "the value of an idea lies in the using of it." Our "aha moment," or idea, happened to be at a small coffee shop on a beautiful night in November in Thailand, so for the past 8 months we've been focusing on "the using of it" part. From logistics to marketing to accounting, we've been putting together the small puzzle pieces that have created a picture showcasing the hard work and dedication of our farmers 8,500 miles away.
When our product launched and store went live on March 21st of this year, we decided that selling our coffee at $12/bag allowed us to stay true to our mission of directly purchasing coffee from farmers at a price that cultivates growth and decreases our carbon footprint from crop to cup. Purchasing, shipping, and roasting coffee in small batches allowed us to organically grow our business, but because it was our first time putting together a product harvested around the globe, there were a few inefficiencies in our supply chain.
After studying our supply chain and making some changes, we have been able to decrease our cost per bag by almost $2 without negatively impacting our mission, which is shown in the chart on the right. Due to this, we're able to revamp our packages and get you your morning cup of coffee in the most efficient and cost effective way possible.
We're continuously blown away by the amount of support that we've received over the last 8 months, and we are extremely excited to be sharing the new packages offered below. Even though our packages have changed and prices have dropped, $1 from every bag sold still goes to funding service projects and trips throughout the United States.
